One in every nine women in the UK will develop breast cancer at some point in her life - more than 45,000 cases are diagnosed each year. It has become the most common cancer in the UK, and is the leading cause of death for women aged 34 to 54.

Primary bone cancer, where the tumour develops from bone cells, is very rare - about 500 cases are diagnosed in the UK each year (only about one in every 500 cancers)

Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK, accounting for almost a quarter of male cancers. Each year, nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed and more than 10,000 die from the disease.

Bowel cancer (also known as rectal, colorectal or colon cancer) affects the lower part of the digestive system - the large bowel and the rectum.

Pancreatic cancer is equally common in men and women, but the majority of cases occur in the over-70s. It accounts for only three per cent of cancers in the UK.

A brain tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue in which some cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, apparently unregulated by the mechanisms that control normal cells.

Most cases of kidney cancer develop in people over the age of 60. The most common early symptom is blood in the urine. If kidney cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, there is a good chance of a cure. In general, the more advanced the cancer (the more it has grown and spread), the less chance that treatment will be curative. However, treatment can often slow the progress of the cancer.

The most common early symptom of cervical cancer (cancer of the cervix) is abnormal vaginal bleeding. Most cases develop in women in their 30s or 40s. If cervical cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, there is a good chance of a cure. Regular cervical screening tests can detect 'pre-cancer' which can be treated before cancer develops.
